ABPI Congress brings IP debate to the Brazilian Northeast

Preparations are in the final stages for ABPI’s 44th International Congress on Intellectual Property, the largest of its kind in Latin America, which will take place on August 12 and 13 in Porto de Galinhas, Pernambuco. After decades limited to the Rio-São Paulo axis, the Congress is bringing the Intellectual Property debate to the Brazilian Northeast.

With just over a month to go until the event, some speakers deserve special mention, starting with the president of the BPTO, Júlio César Moreira. In the opening plenary, likely one of the most attended event sessions, he will discuss the institute’s plans for the National Intellectual Property System. It is a must-attend.

Panel 1, which follows shortly after, is equally noteworthy. The topic is the Porto Digital Case Study, considered by the Brazilian National Association of Promoters of Innovative Ventures (Anprotec) as Brazil’s most advanced technology park. The speakers are Pierre Lucena, president of Porto Digital, and Francisco Bulhões Carvalho da Fonseca, Municipal Secretary of Urban and Economic Development of Rio de Janeiro.

For those interested in discussions involving the regulatory framework of Artificial Intelligence, Panel 3 is unmissable, as it will address the current state of AI regulation globally and in Brazil. The debate will be led by Lauro Locks, Counsellor at the Trade and Environment Division of the WTO (World Trade Organization) Trade and Environment Division, and Bartosz Sujecki, Head of the Intellectual Property Law, IT & Media Practice Group at Van Diepen der Kroef Advocaten in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

AI continues to be a theme in Panel 5, “Protection of AI-Generated Creations and Inventions,” which will debate the ownership of Intellectual Property rights for algorithmic creations – is it human or machine? This challenge will be tackled by Alberto de Sá e Mello from the Portuguese Intellectual Property Association and Maria Beatriz Dellore, Regional IP Advisor for Mercosur, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname at the USPTO.

Technology remains at the forefront in Panel 4, “Technology as a Tool for Social Inclusion,” with the confirmation of a presentation by Andrea Nwabasili, Legal Ethics & Compliance Senior Manager at Novo Nordisk.

Ayato Sakaki from the JPO (Japan Patent Office) and Matías Noetinger from ASIPI (Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property) will discuss “Strategies for Registering Non-Traditional Trademarks” on Panel 6.

The last two panels of the event also bring top-tier debates on Intellectual Property. In Panel 7, Michael Kos from WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) and Juliana Queiroga from the Center for Advanced Studies in Recife (CESAR) will address the issue of “Intellectual Property Assets as Financial Leverage.” In Panel 8, Senior Lawyer Gustavo Redó Monteiro from Stellantis will discuss “Corporate Innovation Policies.”

The closing plenary of the Congress will feature a debate on the local judiciary, with presentations by Judges Alexandre Freire Pimentel and Demócrito Reinaldo Filho from the Pernambuco Court of Justice (TJPE).

At the end, ABPI will present the 5th Patent of the Year Award to the best creation protected by Green Patents, recognizing the work of professionals and companies that understand the importance of Intellectual Property and seek protection for their creations in Brazil. There’s still time to compete  ̶  entries are open until July 12.

Registrations for the Congress are open, with the second discount deadline valid until July 17.
